INSIDE THIS SEASONS CARD
We all recognize the signs of the Winter Solstice season. Evergreen trees covered with lights that shine like a thousand stars, wreaths and holly hung in our homes and carolers singing about a holy night. Yet, one of the most ancient and important signs associated with the winter season is generally overlooked by the western world. It arrives every year and heralds the coming of winter and announces its heavenly presence just as it did two thousand years ago in the near east where a child was born that would change the world forever.
Then, as it is now, a heavenly event occurred every winter season. Above the horizon a giant constellation slowly emerged and filled the night sky with seven brilliant stars. Following this giant was a dazzling star that scorched the heavens. These two objects have been recognized and called by different names by all cultures throughout time and even before the invention of the written word. They are the seven stars of Orion the hunter and adjacent to this giant is the brightest star in the heavens…Sirius. Some have even called Sirius the Star of David or Joseph’s Multicolored Dream Coat.
Soon these two objects were joined by the constellation Leo the Lion on the opposite side of the night sky. Two thousand years ago, Leo was being watched by the astronomer- astrologer - priests of the time because two planets had entered that part of the sky as well. In the year 03 BCE, the very luminous king planet Jupiter and the very lustrous fertility planet Venus simultaneously came together near the “the little king” star Regulus in Leo. For experts of cosmological signs like the Magi, the heavens were changing ruling constellations and were signaling the arrival of the long awaited king of the new age…an astronomical age. You see, thousands of years ago, the celestial bull Taurus reigned, only to be replaced by Aries the Ram. Now the signs were indicating Pisces the Fish would rule the sky. Blood rituals were replaced by baptism in water. Those who followed this new age adopted the symbol of the fish. Our ancient ancestors understood these types of signs and we their descendants would embrace them for the next two thousand years.
Though we may not celebrate in the exact same way as our ancestors, we do continue to commemorate two astronomical events when the seven stars of Orion reappear every year. The Winter Solstice and the memory of the Christmas star.
